The Day We Found Out

1/19/2020: It started out as an uneventful day after hearing that the antibiotics prescribed at the urgent care clinic did not improve the amount of blood in her urine. This is when her sister (our aunt) convinced her that morning to go to the ER. That day my mom encouraged us to go to a family event without her while she was awaiting for her result in the ER. A few hours later, we received a text from our mom that read: “Can you guys come to the ER?”. With that our hearts sank. When we arrived at the hospital, we saw our dad in tears telling us not to cry when we see her. He told us she has Leukemia. We transferred her to the nearest city hospital where we learned more about her Leukemia diagnosis.

(Daughter Michelle): When we walked in, she was in tears. We were all emotional, confused, and unable to process what had happened. My heart felt like it fell out of my chest. I felt sick to my stomach. Why her I thought. Not only is she my mom, she’s my best friend, and someone I relied on for moral support. I needed her more than she knew. I walked in, wiping away my tears and reassured her that we were going to fight this together. She was scared from the unexpected news, but in all honesty, she was stronger than any of us that day.
